Plaster of Paris is a type of building material. It consist of calcium sulphate hemihydrate(CaSO4·1/2H2O ).
Plaster is used as a building material similar to mortar or cement. Like those materials plaster starts as a dry powder that is mixed with water to form a paste which liberates heat and then hardens. Unlike mortar and cement, plaster remains quite soft after drying, and can be easily manipulated with metal tools or even sandpaper. These characteristics make plaster suitable for a finishing, rather than a load-bearing material.But while applying POP special attention should be given to see that it is properly dried otherwise life of the POP deteriorates. Humidity have its effect on POP drying. During conditions where humidity is high drying of POP takes longer than usual. If painting is done on wet POP than paint peels of by forming bubbles or fish-eye.
Moisture level in the concrete should be maintained at 3-5%.
Drying of POP i.e. reduction of moisture can be done with the help of dehumidifiers. Dehumidification is the most effective and quickest method of moisture removal. Dehumidification involves lowering the dew point of the air surrounding the surface where POP or epoxy laying is done, so as the water starts to migrate from the surface to the dry surrounding air. Dehumidification helps to achieve and maintain the level of moisture to prevent paint failure.
For POP laying in inside of buildings, dehumidified air can be fed through duct from the machine. In case of outside in open atmosphere, a vapour barrier surrounding the job is created and dehumidified air is passed inside the vapour barrier through duct.
The desiccant based dehumidifier removes moisture from the air by chemical attraction rather than condensation. Desiccant dehumidifiers contain a desiccant wheel, which is made up of silica gel. Humid air is directed across the desiccant wheel that acts as a drying agent. The moisture is collected in the desiccant.
The moist desiccant is dried using second hot air stream that heats the desiccant and releases the moisture. Then the desiccant is reused to dry more air. In a continuous process the air is dried by the desiccant at the same time the moist desiccant is dried for reuse so that dry air is available at all times continuously.
